Campitos

Campitos turquoise comes from the Campitos Mountain region of Sonora, Mexico and is known for its vibrant medium sky-blue hue. Stones from this mine typically have minimal matrix; occasionally tiny pyrite flecks sparkle within the blue, hinting at “fool’s gold,” and the turquoise forms as free nuggets in clay rather than in hard rock veins. These traits give Campitos material a relatively uniform, bright color ideal for jewelry.

Mining at Campitos has been active since the mid-1980s, making it a significant modern source of turquoise. The mine continues to produce both natural and stabilized stones, filling demand especially after many U.S. mines have closed. Southwestern and Native American jewelers value Campitos for its classic, lively blue tone reminiscent of the famed Sleeping Beauty turquoise. Its combination of beauty, consistency, and availability has made Campitos a popular choice for everything from Zuni inlay work to bold Navajo cabochon pieces.
